A New Year’s Introspection…of sorts

by ETERNAL on December 31, 2008

I say “of sorts” because, from the reading I’ve been doing around the ’sphere, my introspection has already been done. No, it’s not like I wrote the post in advance – I have a bad habit of leaving blog posts until I actually need to write them – it’s just that someone else already transcribed my story as an anime fan for me. That person is usagijen of Scrumptious, and after reading her post on her growth as an anime fan through the medium of blogging, I realized that I had experienced quite the same thing. And with a new year beginning in less than twelve hours, I think I’m ready to take my next step forward.

Yes, I’m aware that she isn’t using a laptop, and no, I don’t know who she is.

A mere day after Christmas, Owen wrote something on what he saw as a damaged social life – how the internet changes the way we interact with people, and how our lives can change as a result of it. This, from what I’ve experienced, can be very true; why bother forcing yourself to talk about something you find uninteresting when all of your fellow bloggers and anime fans are waiting for you on Twitter and IRC? Why bother scouring your school for the most diligent fans when you’re already connected to some of leaders of the community? Those are two of the many questions that I’ve been asking myself recently, and I believe that Owen covered the topic in much detail; there’s little more that I can say to back up his point.

However, I don’t think we agree on everything, either. The internet, as I see it, is not a bad thing, and it’s certainly not something we should distrust or discredit. My thoughts on the matter are rather scattered and not too distinct, but while I can agree that common interests are treated more as a given for those of us who are active on the internet, I don’t think I can bring myself to look down on the method of communication, either.

And here we are: the final day. Did you really think I would pick anything else? After going on about it endlessly after it first aired, and after taking days to recover from the effects of a mere 22 minutes of animation, this was the one moment that I had planned from the start. It was quite possibly the climax of Yuuko’s story (I say possibly because I haven’t seen the final two episodes yet), and in my eyes, it was easily the most heart-stopping moment of the year.

That was definitely me last year…

The second-to-last Moment of Anime…what a fun time it has been. Counting down the year’s most exciting scenes (or gifts, as the original idea goes), tossing together a list of said scenes at the last minute, procrastinating until the end of the day to write posts that total up to be less than 500 words anyhow…as strange as it sounds, it was actually pretty fun.

And now we’re finally here, on Christmas Eve. Having played Animal Crossing for the night, I’ve got about an hour to burn before sleeping, and what better way to spend it than in this comfortable – sometimes a little tsuntsun, but still mostly comfortable – community we know as the anime blogosphere? Read on for my second-last post in the 12 Days series and a little celebration for Nagisa’s birthday.

⑨ Moments of Anime #4: Kimikiss pure rouge ep 24

I didn’t use a more self-explanatory picture just to be on the safe side, but be warned: spoilers ahead.

Much like my opinion of True Tears as mentioned in my last post, Kimikiss proved itself as far more than a typical VN adaptation, except this time, I knew it was brilliant right from the first episode. With an unbelievably girlish yet unbelievably catchy OP, a light, easy art style that feels almost shoujo at times, and a casual yet occasionally dramatic slice-of-life setting, it quickly propelled itself to the top of my list, making it one of my fondest moments in anime; and I daresay that it’s one of my fondest in more than just the past year.
