The World God Only Knows and the Art of Love

by ETERNAL on April 25, 2010

Love is War, as they say. Fighting on the battlefield of love requires not only the guts and courage of a shounen hero, but also the level-headed tactical prowess of a military commander. Keima Katsuragi is one such warrior who, having distanced himself from the frailty of human emotion, fights with his life on the line against impossible odds. Armed only with his wit and intellect, he stands proudly as a one-man army against thousands of escaped spirits from Hell who hide within human hosts and absorb their energy. His dramatic tale of love and loss is one that has won the hearts of countless fans, including my own. It comes as no surprise that he will one day become the protagonist of his own anime series.

There’s a certain topic within moe fandom that is rarely broached. Considering the amount of fuss people make over events like Sal9000‘s wedding, you’d think it would have come up, but most conversations skirt around what I have always considered to be the heart of the matter. In essence, it boils down to the following questions:

These points beat around the bush as well, but I think you get the idea. I believe that the often-overlooked “secret” behind moe and 2D complex lies within the exact opposite of what ero-ge is traditionally supposed to be about.

Artbook Review: GU-RE-N (Noizi Ito)

I would be surprised if you haven’t already seen Noizi Ito‘s character designs somewhere, even if you didn’t realize it at the time. Though she appears to be more active in the eroge scene, I’m sure we’ve all laid eyes on the covers of the Shana and Haruhi light novels by now, both of which have been released in English. To my knowledge, Guren was her first commercial artbook, and it’s comprised mainly of miscellaneous pictures from the games she’s worked on, with a solid chunk dedicated to Shakugan no Shana. The only downside I can think of is the lack of full-sized images, but you’ll be able to make those decisions for yourself in a moment.

Artbook Review: Nanairo Ice

by ETERNAL on March 20, 2009

nanairo-ice

Out of all of Japan’s excellent bishoujo artists, Naru Nanao would have to be my favourite. I can’t quite put my finger on why, nor can I use any over-the-top artistic jargon to justify that statement, but in layman’s terms, her character designs are absolutely delicious. Seeing as she worked for companies like minori and Circus and designed some of the more famous eroge characters such as Miyako Miyamura (ef) and Nemu Asakura (Da Capo), I highly doubt that I’m the only one who feels this way about her work.

And if you’re willing to pay up to the overpriced import stores, you can see first-hand why she has earned her place as a personal favourite.
