The Surrealism of Yasuhiro Yoshiura

by ETERNAL on December 9, 2009

Pale CocoonI’m not sure if surrealism is the technical term to describe this unusual director’s vague yet distinctive style, but Yasuhiro Yoshiura of Eve no Jikan fame is undoubtedly an oddball in the industry.

And I say “oddball” with the most respect that the word can connote. Though I’ve spent less than an hour viewing his works, I’m already unquestionably entranced with his well-thought-out direction, delicious eye-candy, and ambiguous yet unpretentious storytelling.

However, the best part of it is that you don’t have to be an academic to figure out what he’s trying to say.

Akiyuki Shinbo’s Day Off

by ETERNAL on December 6, 2009

Akiyuki Shinbo's Day Off (Tsukuyomi -MOON PHASE-)I don’t remember what Ferris Bueller did on his day off, but I imagine he wouldn’t mind my using his wild escapades as a less-than-apt metaphor for a certain infamous series by a certain infamous director.

Subtlety in Romance, Sweet Blue Flowers

Aoi Hana

I often ponder the appeal of yuri. Is it the forbidden, exotic allure of a pair of pining maidens, begging to be fetishized and capitalized upon by the industry? On some level, yes – but making that claim would be akin to claiming that all romanticized love stories with attractive females exist solely for the lonely fan.

Yuri, like all settings and devices and what have you, is simply a premise. It’s something that can enhance a story if used effectively, something that can potentially add that extra push to cross the line between good and great. Recently, one such series stirs warmly in my memory as I recall it: Aoi Hana, a warm love story about crying lesbians.

Hatsukoi Limited (2)

When 99% of the population consumes some form of creative media, we do it from our own perspective. When we think about what we liked or what we didn’t like, our own personal opinions are likely to hold more sway over the quality of the work itself, and our final opinion is usually somewhere in between the two extremes. Since anime bloggers are not professional critics trained to ignore their opinions for work, we usually do the same.

As you can figure, though, this can lead to trouble. J.C Staff’s Hatsukoi Limited was praised quite a bit while it was airing in the Spring, and I don’t deny that it has its own unique charms, but try as I might,  I can’t seem to change my opinion that something didn’t work for me.

Code Geass R2 – 25 [END]

by ETERNAL on September 29, 2008

We’ve sure come a long way since the beginning, haven’t we? Through the American history, through the Death Note-esque foreshadowing, and through the complexity surrounding the power of Geass – at the end of it all, the conclusion awaits. Was it good? Bad? Did it even make sense? At the moment, mixed opinions are likely circling the internets, but there’s one thing I know for sure by now: this show isn’t bad. In fact, it’s probably quite good.
